Ida and pingala in other systems

Don't make the mistake of assuming that the symbology of ida and pingala is confined to yoga and Indian mysticism. The ida-pingala principle represents a universal truth. It is therefore a part of every spiritual system in some form. Often the same idea of balance is conveyed by completely different symbols, but usually the symbology is strikingly similar. Hermes was the ancient Egyptian personification of wisdom. He is also associated with Hermes Trismegistus who is believed to have originated the science of alchemy. There is much confusion between history and myth, but this doesn't concern us here. Hermes is usually depicted holding a unique rod in one hand, with two wings at the top end and entwined with two serpents. This is called a caduceus and is illustrated on the right hand side of the diagram under the heading entitled Svmbolism of Ida and Pingala' in part 1 of this discussion1. Meditation Ajapa Japa Stage

The whole aim of yoga is to find this balance between ida and pingala. Many methods are utilized. One of the simplest yet most effective is ajapa. Continuous practise of ajapa puts you in tune with the breath and the associated mantra. The breath is a continual reminder that you must be aware of yourself in relation to the outer and inner world. And while you are alive, the breath never stops. It is therefore the continual reminder. If you use it, it will make you more harmonized and sensitive. You will attain perfect balance between excessive introversion and excessive extroversion you will find there is a balance between becoming totally lost in the outside world of material objects and becoming totally lost in the inner world of fascinating psychic events. Perfect balance of ida and pingala implies that the sushumna functions. This leads directly to meditation. This modification of the practice relates directly to kriya yoga.

Easing Through Menopause

Yoga balances the endocrine system and can ease the difficult transition by stabilizing hormone levels. Inverted postures are particularly helpful for hot flashes, because they cool the body and fill it with prana. Pranayama, too, is cooling to the body. As you work through menopause, incorporate these postures into your yoga routine > Downward facing dog and other forward-bending postures, such as standing head to knees and yoga mudra (all in Chapter 18). These forward-bending poses help you focus inwardly, an important process right now. Instead of shunning your body or feeling that it has betrayed you, embrace it, get to know it all over again, and let it work for you, leading you to a higher spiritual plane. > Sun salutation (Chapter 16). Kapalabhati Frontal sinus cleansing

Kapala-bhati (pronounced kah-pah-la-bhah-tee) literally means skull luster and is also known as frontal sinus (or brain) cleansing. The curious Sanskrit name is explained by the fact that the technique causes a sense of luminosity in the head, as well as lightheadedness, especially when you're overdoing it. Sometimes this breathing method is wrongly equated with bhastrika (bellows), which is a more advanced technique of rapid breathing, but kapala-bhati belongs to the preparatory practices of traditional Hatha Yoga. The technique requires rapid inhalation and exhalation through the nose with short staccato breaths, with emphasis on exhalation.


The most basic Bhanda is Jalandhara Bhanda, the Neck Lock. This Lock is practiced by contracting back on the neck and throat. The chin rests in or near the notch between the collar bones at the top of the breast bone. The head stays level without tilting forward. The spine in the neck straightens to allow the increased flow of pranic energy to travel freely into the upper glandular centers of the brain. This is critical. In the Kundalini Yoga Kriyas, a vast energy is generated that produces psychic heat which opens the pranic Nadis (channels) that may be blocked. When this blocking happens, there can sometimes be a quick shift in blood pressure causing dizziness. Usually used in all meditative, easy pose (cross legged) Asanas.

With the Vajra Mudra, you can stimulate circulation. The back bends and side bends of yoga (see pages 182 and 186) also activate these respective energies. Walking at a brisk pace, listening to lively or exciting music (such as Beethoven's Hammerl(lavier Piano Sonata and the 1st, 2nd, 5th, or 7th Symphony George Gerschwin's Piano Concert in F Major jazz or rock 'n' roll, march music, techno, etc.) can also give you new drive.
